Why laminate

The most affordable way to transform multiple rooms.

Modern laminate is a practical, durable and cost-effective flooring option — provided it is fitted correctly over a properly prepared subfloor.

Realistic wood and stone looks

Modern laminate uses high-definition photography and embossed texture to produce a surface that closely resembles real wood or stone at a fraction of the cost.

Scratch-resistant wear layer

The AC rating system grades laminate by durability. We specify AC4 or AC5 for residential use — rated for heavy domestic traffic and resistant to everyday surface damage.

Click-lock installation

Planks lock together without adhesive, floating over the subfloor. This makes fitting faster and means the floor can be removed and replaced without damage to the subfloor.

Suitable for most rooms

Laminate works well in living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and offices. We advise against it in bathrooms or rooms with heavy moisture — LVT is the right product there.

Wide range of formats

Available in plank and tile formats, in a range of lengths, widths and finishes. Wide-plank laminate in particular can look convincing in a well-prepared room.

Cost-effective renovation

Laminate is the most affordable way to transform the look of a floor across multiple rooms. It is a practical choice for rental properties and budget-conscious renovations.

Why subfloor prep matters even for laminate

A floating floor is only as good as what it floats on.

Laminate that clicks underfoot has a hollow beneath it. Laminate that lifts at the edges was not given enough expansion room or was laid over an uneven surface. These are not product failures — they are fitting failures. We level the subfloor before laying, use quality underlay, and leave correct expansion gaps at every wall and fixed object.

Subfloor checked to ±3mm per 2m and levelled where required before underlay is laid.
AC4 minimum specification for all domestic installations — AC5 recommended for rental properties.
Quality combination underlay used throughout — not budget foam that compresses within a year.
Expansion gaps of 8–10mm maintained at all walls, doorframes and fixed objects.

How we work

Six steps from survey to a finished laminate floor.

01

Survey & subfloor assessment

Even for a floating floor, the subfloor matters. We check for moisture, unevenness and any structural concerns. Laminate laid over an unlevel subfloor clicks at the joints within a year.

Free visit, 30–45 minutes
02

Product specification

We advise on the AC rating, plank format and finish suited to the room's use. Samples brought to the visit. A fixed quote is issued within three working days.

03

Subfloor preparation

Any hollow, high spot or debris under a floating laminate floor causes clicking and movement. We level with self-levelling compound and ensure the surface is clean and flat before the underlay goes in.

Half a day to 1 day typically
04

Underlay fitting

Quality foam or combination underlay laid throughout. The underlay provides cushioning, reduces sound transmission and helps the laminate feel solid underfoot rather than hollow.

Same day as subfloor prep
05

Installation

Planks clicked together and laid in the correct direction for the room. Expansion gaps maintained at all walls and fixed objects. Door bars and threshold strips fitted and trimmed.

1–2 days depending on area
06

Finishing & walk-through

Skirting, beading and threshold bars fitted. Doors trimmed for clearance where needed. Walk-through with you before we leave. Written 1-year fitting guarantee issued.

Customer reviews

A selection of feedback from homeowners we have fitted laminate flooring for across London.

Three rooms of laminate and the hallway. The subfloor in one room needed levelling first — they spotted it at the survey and priced it clearly. The finished result is clean and flat. No clicking, no movement.

B.K.

Stratford, East London

Good value for money and done properly. They used quality underlay and the threshold bars at the doorways are neat. Would use again for the bedrooms.

V.T.

Tooting, South London

Fitted laminate in a rental flat. They advised on the right AC rating for a rental and the job was done in a day. Tenants have been in for eight months and it still looks fine.

Frequently asked

Laminate flooring questions, answered.

What is the AC rating and which do I need?

AC stands for Abrasion Class — it is the industry standard for rating laminate durability. AC1–AC3 are for light domestic use. AC4 is rated for heavy domestic use and is the minimum we specify for hallways, living rooms and any room with significant foot traffic. AC5 is rated for light commercial use and is worth specifying for rental properties or families with children and pets.

Is laminate suitable for kitchens and bathrooms?

No — standard laminate is not waterproof and should not be used in kitchens or bathrooms where water contact is likely. It can swell and lift if it gets wet. For kitchens and bathrooms, LVT (Luxury Vinyl Tile) is the right product — it is fully waterproof and designed for those environments.

Can laminate be laid over existing flooring?

Sometimes. It can float over existing hard floors provided the surface is flat, level and structurally sound. Adding height may create problems at doorways or adjoining rooms. We check this at the survey and advise honestly on whether it is the right approach.

What causes laminate to click or creak underfoot?

Almost always a subfloor problem — a hollow spot, a high point or an unlevel surface. When a laminate plank has no support beneath it at a specific point, it deflects under weight and the joint clicks. This is why we level the subfloor before laying rather than rely on the underlay to bridge imperfections.

Can laminate be sanded or refinished?

No. Laminate has a photographic surface layer — it is not real wood and cannot be sanded. If the surface is heavily worn or damaged, the affected planks need to be replaced. This is one of the key differences between laminate and engineered wood flooring.

Do you supply or fit-only?

Both. We supply from our Quick-Step, Pergo and Egger trade accounts, or we will fit laminate you have already purchased. If you supply, share the product specification before the survey so we can confirm the correct underlay and subfloor preparation.

How long does a typical laminate installation take?

A one-bed flat is typically done in one day including subfloor preparation. A three-bed house is usually two days. We will give you a specific timeline in the quote.
